2 ARBOS INTO VERMICOMPOSTING PRODUCTION

Two Agrarian Reform Beneficiary Organizations (ARBOs) turn to vermicomposting production in Silay City.

With technicial and materials support from the Responsible Sourcing from Smallholders (RSS) Program, a total of 470 kilograms of organic fertilizer were harvested from the 2 ARBOs, namely, Sto. Tayap Upland Farm Workers Association (STUFAWA) and Violeta Integrated Farmers Associaiton (VIFA). These ARBOs are into vermicomposting, a process where earthworms convert waste material fertilizer.

From the 470 kilograms of organic fertilizer produced, STUFAWA contributed 270 kilograms. STUFAWA’s first 200kgs of harvest were applied in their vegetable garden, while its remaining 70kgs were sold at Php15/kg. Another batch of production will be harvested in the first quarter of 2023.

On the other hand, VIFA harvested a total of 200 kilograms of organic fertilizer, with 80kgs used in the expansion area for their vegetable garden and the rest of the production used in the original vegetable garden. VIFA’s production is still ongoing.

With their continuous production, STUFAWA and VIFA are considered as potential partners in 2023 for the organic vegetable farming. Constant monitoring and technical coaching on vermicomposting was provided to these ARBOs.
