Scholars under the Educational Aid Program (EDAP) of the Sugar Industry Foundation, Inc. (SIFI) went through the First Aid Training and Safety Measures Seminar led by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) of Negros Occidental.
PDRRMO Officers Geve Libertad, Samuel Solis, and Benjie Artesano, equipped the 30 SIFI scholars on the community-based disaster risk reduction and management training held at Nature’s Village Resort, Talisay City.
The training started with a situationer on local and national disasters followed by a risk analysis through the Coconut Tree Exercise. Basic concepts on disasters and calamities were discussed, followed by the steps to disaster prevention and mitigation.
The afternoon session was allotted for the basic first aid training. Topics on the responsibilities of a first aid provider, limitations of first aid, emergency action principles and seeking emergency help were tackled.
Emergency situations that result to trauma injuries and its first aid interventions were also presented to the scholars. Afterwards, the scholars were individually given a piece of triangular bandage and were demonstrated how to dress wounds and splint for fractures. The scholars were also taught to handle injured people and how they should be transferred to a stretcher. The practical hands-on exercises concluded with the proper execution of the cardiopulmonary resuscitation or the CPR.
With all the discussions and practical exercises, PDRRMO Officer Geve Libertad also emphasized the importance and relevance of Psychological First Aid in the present generation.
Shiella Marie Tagibao, a 3rd year Management Accounting student, shared that her key takeaway was, “knowing the correct life-saving procedures in an emergency situation is a vital skill, because another person’s life might be completely in your hands.”
Kyneshie Franz Eseo, a 4th year Bachelor of Engineering Technology student, expressed his gratitude to SIFI for conducting the seminar where he gained practical knowledge about essential life-saving skills like the CPR, and how to treat wound injuries that would help him not only as a student but as a member of the community.
The training was assisted by SIFI Skills Training and Health Officer Milen Joy Abad, alongside Education Project Officer Angelica Hebionada and Livelihood Project Officer Mariz Tina Mispeñas.
SIFI continues to aim for its scholars’ holistic development to become capable and competent citizens in this generation.
